How Fast the Team Changes

With Build Season just around the corner, we wanted to share some changes with you all!

Team Structure

This year, we are starting a new way to separate the work within the team. Each student is assigned to a guild and a mechanism, each utilizing the student’s skills more within the team. Communication was another major concern from last season between students of different subgroups.

Firstly, a Guild is an organization of students based off their learned skillset, which includes Business, Manufacturing, CAD, and Programming. This change was to avoid the confusion between sub-groups and sub-systems, which were also changed to be mechanisms (Confusion Crisis Avoided!) A Mechanism team is made up of students from different guilds all working on a specific mechanism on the Robot. The robot is split into 3 separate groups: a drivebase and two manipulators. In previous years, we noticed it became difficult to know what was going on in different sub-groups causing us to fall behind on our goals. Now, we hope that students will have better understanding on the progress of the robot while designing, building, and programming our robot.

Second, we have assigned students into leadership roles to streamline communication on team and robot progress. Each role is meant to give students a chance to lead and encourage others who may not be in their guild. The defined mechanism teams each have one student lead, and their responsibilities include documentation and integration of their respective mechanisms. There are also leads for team-wide responsibilities such as competition readiness, operations coordinator and systems integrators. Student leads are meant to balance out work put onto mentors and give other students a role model within the team.

Drivebase Coordinator: Milena D.

Mechanism Coordinators: Rhys B. and Chance P.

Competition Readiness Coordinator:  Jay K.

Operations Coordinator: Lina R.

Systems Integrators: Bonden T. and Jackson A.

Meeting Schedule

We noticed our students got burnt out while working back to back nights last season. To avoid this, we have adapted our meeting schedule to provide a break back-to-back days. We will now meet 4 days-a-week on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, cutting out the required Wednesday meetings. Students will now have 3 weekdays to focus on schoolwork and other activities. This will also allow time in-between meetings to get a refreshed pair of eyes back in the shop.
